The Vasectomy Reversal Procedure

What is a Vasectomy Reversal?

Let's start first with an explanation of a Vasectomy (male sterilization procedure). A Vasectomy is a surgical procedure that transects the vas deferens thus preventing sperm from flowing to the prostate, and ultimately out of the body. Obstruction of the vas is usually accomplished by removing a small segment of the vas deferens and placing a suture or small metal clip on the end of the vas.

Therefore, a Vasectomy Reversal is a surgical procedure that re-attaches the cut ends of the vas deferens, restoring the flow of sperm from the testicle to the prostate. It's important to note that Vasectomy Reversal is a delicate microsurgical procedure and should be done by a surgeon skilled in microsurgical techniques.

What to Expect

After an initial consultation with Dr. Natan Bar-Chama, you will have a registered nurse coordinator who will work with you during the entire process. Our nurse coordinator will schedule you for the procedure, ensure that you have all post- operative medications on hand for your recovery, and be available to answer any questions that you may have. In addition, you will receive follow up contact from your nurse coordinator to ensure that your recovery is going as planned.

On the day before the procedure we will ask you to avoid eating or drinking anything after midnight in preparation for anesthesia. Upon arrival at your designated time to RMA of New York's Manhattan location, you will be checked in by a registered nurse and have an opportunity to meet your Anesthesiologist, who will review your health history and be able to answer any questions you have about the anesthesia process.

Your procedure will take approximately 2 1/2 to 4 hours, after which, you will be cared for in our recovery room staffed with professional registered nurses. We will ensure that you understand your post-operative instructions, and are comfortable before we discharge you home. Your time in the recovery room is typically about half the amount of time you spend in the operating room.

Overall you can expect to spend about 4 to 6 hours at RMA of New York the day of your surgery. You will need to have someone to escort you home, because after anesthesia you may still be a bit groggy.

You should allow 1-2 full days for recovery, 4 weeks before engaging in strenuous activity, and 6-8 weeks before resuming normal sexual activity. If you are traveling by plane to Manhattan for the vasectomy reversal, it is possible to fly home the next day.

If you are coming to Manhattan for the procedure, we would ask you to fly in one day prior and plan on staying overnight in the New York area the day of your procedure. Our team can provide you with information for hotels in the area that are convenient to our facility.
